Louis Agassiz Fuertes' talents took him to the Yucutan Peninsula of Mexico, where he was the first scientist to spot a beautiful oriole which now bears his name (Icteris fuertes, or Fuertes oriole, sometimes considered a co-species of the Orchard oriole). In Colombia, his keen eye was also noticed, and another species, Fuertes parrot (aka Indigo-winged parrot) in the Western Andes now bears his name. Apparently, his companions adored him for his bonhomie and cooking skills as much as his awesome birding observations.
By 1927 Fuertes was in full flight, accompanying an expedition to Abyssinia (modern-day Ethiopia) and arriving back in the States with family and a passel of sketches in tow, just as Charles Lucky Lindbergh took off in the other direction
