Players are bigger, faster, and stronger today. Grabbing a base with the mass-velocities involved means lots of broken fingers, joints, ligament damage. Stuff players need to play defense.

When you make millions of dollars with your hands, a little protection is appropriate, I think.

after dislocating his left pinky finger on a headfirst slide into second base. He wasn't wearing oven mitts.
