MLB's first HR of '21... in the snow!

Miguel Cabrera wasted no time providing the first big highlight of the new season on Thursday, crushing a two-run first-inning homer to right field off reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber with snow swirling around him at Comerica Park. The drive gave the Tigers a quick 2-0 lead over Cleveland.

The snow was so heavy for Cabrera's 488th career homer, his 350th as a Tiger, that he slid into second base, briefly thinking the ball didn't clear the wall. An umpire review confirmed his shot as the first home run of the Major League season.

For years I've been hearing Cleveland players complain how cold temperatures hinder their early-season hitting. It's not that big a deal if they open in a cold-weather city (like today), but eventually they play a warm weather team ... and are a week or two behind.
