Report: MLB considering starting extra innings with runner on second base

Report: MLB considering starting extra innings with runner on second base

Major League Baseball plans on testing a rule change in the minor leagues this season that automatically would place a runner on second base to start extra innings, according to Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan.

The rule will also be implemented in the upcoming World Baseball classic next month. Major League baseball could experiment with the rule Gulf Coast League and Arizona League.

“It’s not fun to watch when you go through your whole pitching staff and wind up bringing a utility infielder in to pitch,” Joe Torre told Yahoo. “As much as it’s nice to talk about being at an 18-inning game, it takes time.”

The rule change would start in the 10th inning and every inning thereafter.

This traditionalist doesn't like entertaining this idea AT ALL. Hell, I love seeing, say, the center fielder come in and pitch in the seventeenth inning, with the announcers scrambling for info and report he was known for his blistering 78 mph fastball in high school.

Bottom line: Baseball is a game of attrition

In an extra inning game, if visiting team scores, the home team always has last licks to tie it, or go ahead and win the game outright. But you never know what these idiots will do.

Wtf? What happens when they run out of runners and they put a pitcher out there and he pulls a hammy? Baseball can't be tamed.

Joe Maddon was awesome this year in shuffling his players. One game he took the Left hander out and moved him to left field so that he could pitch later if need be. The Cubs won that game.

Stop trying to change baseball for fans who don't watch it.
I buy tickets, and food, and merch, and radio subscriptions, and watch 145+ games a year. Don't piss me off for a casual fan.

I once saw a 13 inning game in Atlanta and wouldn't change it for anything.

After all, they done sold all their advertising time for the allotted time slot, and would lose money during extended play.

Stop trying to change baseball for fans who don't watch it. I like that!

I caught a solid 140 games on my trusty old AM transistor radio.

It's exciting and rare when a team goes through its pitching staff and is forced to use someone else.

I would support shortening the baseball season a lot more than this.

In the game of Sticky McShnickens, the tie goes to the runner.
