Rare Shelby Cobra skids on wet roadway, crashes on California's Highway 50

San Francisco Chronicle / Dec 21, 2024

A rare Shelby Cobra crashed on Highway 50 east of Sacramento near Placerville (El Dorado County) over the weekend, striking a metal guardrail after the driver lost control, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers from the CHP’s East Sacramento division responded to the single-vehicle crash, which involved a high-value classic car that drew the attention of both authorities and car enthusiasts.

According to a CHP Facebook post, the driver accelerated through a wet patch of roadway, causing the vehicle to skid before crashing.

The average resale price of a classic Shelby Cobra is estimated at $1.8 million, according to the car appraisal site Classic.com.

I guess I get it -- a chance to open up a Cobra on a stretch of road less traveled. This chance came with a price. If one could afford an actual Shelby Cobra, couldn't one also afford to rent track time too?

or rather his family owned 2. Both inherited from their father. I believe they ended up selling one just to pay the insurance premiums on the second car.

Works of automotive art.

commensurate with the car being driven. Steve McQueen this was not. Or Paul Newman!

No authentic Cobras were ever made of fiberglass.

This photo looks like it was taken near El Dorado Hills, an upscale suburb. Placerville is further into the Sierra foothills, more curves and more hills. looks like they can fix it.
