(61,033 posts)but sorry to say, they have been one of the most poorly run franchises since Al Davis' hey day.
Hiring Josh McDaniel as coach (he previously failed as HC in Denver was it) was another blunder in continuous string of them. He took a playoff team and turned them into a big loser. He made QB Derek Carr the scapegoat of his horrible defense and playcalling by benching him, and now the hires Garrapolo, not an improvement IMO.
We're doomed to another losing season.
Guess they never heard that Lamar Jackson, a dynamic, winning QB, is out there primed and ready for a new situation.
My long-time team is just poorly run, and has been for a long time.

(6,068 posts)Al Davis always said his son was a dumbass, and he's proved that since inheriting Al's masterpiece franchise. I'm a Forty Niner faithful now, but still follow the Raiders quite a bit.
I think this is actually a good move for both Jimmy and the Raiders. Derek Carr was an enthusiast leader, but his QB skills were overrated in my opinion. I'm a fan of Jimmy's and want to see him succeed.

(61,033 posts)as QB, never had defense worth a nickel. Several games this past season he got the team double digit leads only to see McDaniel's defense squander it away. Check all the successful QBs and you'll find there's a good defense behind them. It doesn't happen without a good defense.
You are right however about the son of Al being a dumb ass (see hiring of McDaniels who failed in his first stint as a HC. Why hire a previous loser?)
As for Carr, you may not know he's had one of the highest completion percentages of all QBs for the last few years. This past season was not one of his best but I still contend that if the poor defense hadn't squandered several double digit leads in games, they could've made the playoffs like last season when Carr rallied them from the Gruden debacle and the Henry Ruggs tragedy.
Even greats like Brady and Manning have off years. They move on from Carr, but Lamar Jackson is still out there, and he's certainly a much more dynamic QB than Garoppolo. They should've went after him. Jus think what that team would be with QB Jackson, one of the WR in the game, a good tight end and slot receiver and the great RB they have. That offense would be hard to stop.
Garopollo IMO is just OK. The 49er have been trying get rid of him for years.

(6,068 posts)Jimmy's an 'OK' quarterback. He's very above average if his O-line can protect him long enough to deliver the ball. His bad points are he can't scramble out of trouble when the pocket collapses, and he's very injury prone. But having said that, he's a good bridge to carry the Raiders until they find their next qb.
Agree with what you say about a team needing a great defense in order for a qb to do well, but it doesn't change my opinion of Carr being overrated relative to the money he was being paid. But everyone has their own opinion, and I certainly respect yours.
As for Lamar Jackson, he's no longer in play after the Ravens put a franchise tag on him.
brush
(61,033 posts)not the untouchable one. With the tag they put on him, other teams can make an offer. The Raven could match it if they want. That's the difference with the main franchise which does take a player off the market.
I'm just resigned to another poor season. McDaniels was a poor choice as coach and Garopollo, as I said, is just OK.

(6,068 posts)The Raiders certainly don't have the quality players the Niners do, so that's a given.
If I'm a Raider fan, I'm excited about Jimmy throwing to Devante Adams. Poor season or not, those two should combine for some exciting plays if Jimmy can stay healthy.

(4,786 posts)Meaning other teams can make an offer like you said, but if they win, they need to give the Ravens 2 first round draft picks.
brush
(61,033 posts)if they strike a deal according to the terms specified by that non-exclusive tag.
With Adams, the tight end, slot receiver and great running back they have, the Raiders offense would've been awesome. Their defense however, needs a lot of work. And that coach, not for me. They hire him after he failed at his first HC job. Again like I said, my Raiders have been a poorly run franchise for too long now. They were once one of the winning-ess teams in the league.
