Authoritarian Republicans hated the socialist economic component but they admired the authoritarian political component. Now that the authoritarian wing of the Republican party has taken over their party it shouldn't be surprising that there are many parallels between the Republicans and the Soviets.

... its pliancy towards Russian political leaders. Remember, the Tsar ruled over the clergy, and they've kept that tradition. So parallels go back to Tsarist days.
ETA: GOPers under Ford and Reagan regarded Solzhenitsyn as almost a saint because he opposed the CPSU, but he wanted to go back to an older Russia where the Russian Orthodox Church held a great deal of power, backed by the rulers. He eventually backed Putin, and vehemently opposed Ukrainian independence.

its just horrifying.
Political purges, killing off the merit-based Civil Service, political minders, militarized borders with peaceful allies, propaganda, rewriting history it just goes in and on and on.
