It would be great if we could start a book club.

Getting a couple (or a bunch) of people to read the same novel at once is a great way to really enjoy a book and to share your thoughts about it to others. Having a friend to do this with is wonderful, but the one friend I have who reads has a very busy lifestyle and can't read as fast as I can. It puts too much pressure on her and makes me slow way down when I want to speed up. So, whaddya think?

1. Hi Zanana1.....

Back at the begining of Jan another poster brought the idea of book discussion to the group. Goblinmonger worked with with her and started an offsite group and also a different book discussion thread right here, see the pinned thread at the top of the group.

If you are interested in joining just contact Goblin. I'm sure he would welcome everyone interested.

It has been open for a month and is still part 1, so I wonder if it fell through. The schedule for it was in this thread:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/11931074
I wasn't at a point to start the book at the time, so I decided to sit that one out, but I don't know what happened with it. I was figuring I would get in on the next one if it was a book I could get at the library (not too new).

There is another one on a reading website where they set up a DU group, but I didn't want to join yet another site, so I passed on that one too. I think they were intending on doing classics in that one---and I love classics. Here is the thread on it:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/1193876

But I do agree that it is fun to have someone to discuss a book with while you are reading it.

Anyone who knows what is happening with the pinned thread or how the Goodreads discussion is going????

I thought the timing was going to be good to get things started when I did. Then life decided to tell me how wrong I was. I apologize for not moving the book club thing forward, but will post on the pinned thread to get people's thoughts as I think things have calmed down and I can move forward with it. Any feedback is appreciated.

You don't need anything fancy to get started in a discussion. Do what Curmudgeness did and just come out and say, "I'm reading such and such a book, starting this weekend. Join me if you like." If no one joins, just keep posting the title of the book and the chapter you finished. Somebody will jump in eventually... There's no shame in trying...and somebody might take pity and join you.

Same goes for you, banana, I mean zanana...

The same format would work for you - Chaper 1 for one thread, Chapter 2 for the next thread. Take an example from what we're doing.

Maybe it's an experiment we can try again.

Currently I am in the middle of rereading 5 Victorian novels for a Victorian unit experiment in the Brit Lit class I teach where they read a novel of choice in a book group (we're using Goodreads for that discussion!).
