It was one where the bad guy ends up getting away and picking up a new life somewhere else. It was a Matthew Scudder book, thats why I picked it up. Matthew Scudder is the detective. Its called Hope to Die.
I like where the perp is either good and dead or good and locked away. Maybe because so much of the time it doesnt happen in real life.

I've never read any of his stories but I've read the author book about how he creates believeable characters...
