China: Backlash over marriage question in Olympian's interview

A Chinese state media interview with an Olympic gold medallist asking when she would get married and have children has sparked backlash online.

The CCTV segment with Gong Lijiao, who won the women's shot put final on Sunday, also described her as a "manly woman".

Netizens have criticised the interview calling it sexist and narrow-minded.

They discussed it online with the hashtag: "Is marriage the only thing that can be talked about women?"

The questions have led many to object to what they see as ingrained expectations of Chinese women as well as outdated ideals of beauty and femininity.

He asked me if I had child-care lined up for my small child. I said would you ask that question of a man? And I got up and walked out. They called me and wanted me back but I'd soured on them.

There are so many women in the world who don't fit the ideal "look" for a man's wife. Why rub it in? She worked her butt off to succeed in her life. Why go after the one area where she would be doesn't fit the preferred criteria?

Totally lacking in basic decency to ask about that.

She's a big girl and she worked damn hard at her craft. "Throwing shit" (as all those sports are collectively referred to in my family) is not easy. I have a granddaughter who throws shot and discus and she would be very offended if someone asked her that, even though she's currently only a senior in high school.
