so what do emergency responders do if the safety bolt is locked on the residential door as well as the normal lock ?

It occurred to me that many people lock themselves in with both the doorknob and also the bolt knob.

So if a person routinely does that, but then needs to call first responders for some reason.... do the responders break the window in the door?

I was thinking of putting an extra house key outside in a potted plant, but I would need to put both keys there.

that only they can access in a fire or police emergency. Call your fire department and/or sheriff/police.

Firefighters might just cut the bolt, but windows are a weak point. Not speaking from experience!!!

I read a bunch about home protection a few years ago.

I also should probably put a cat photo on the door or window, for fire fighters or others to take note there's a pet inside.

I do live in a very safe neighborhood, lucky me.

Leaving keys where they can be found is a good idea. I have mine in my garage, the door to which is not locked. Several people know exactly where to find those keys if need be.
