Related: About this forumI have a question about a patch
I unpacked a bag of sew-on or iron on cloth patches we bought about 10 years ago at a yard sale. The patches are a mix of military and professional.
I found information about most of the patches, but not this one. When I looked for this one, I found information about the CVW-8 , but didn't find this patch. It is 4 3/8" x 3 3/4" I think it might be a joke, but I don't know. I put a picture of the patch on Imgur. Here is the link: https://imgur.com/a/MyuQPQw
I hope someone knows something about this patch. It has me very curious!

(19,323 posts)It is a tan, orange, red, yellow, black and white patch. Looks like a Lincoln penny, heads up. 1972 as the date. At the top there is an extended arc embroidered with "In Abe We Trust" and at the bottom, there is an extended arc embroidered with "CVW-8 The Adventure Continues"
I'm sorry you can't see it. I don't know of another way to share pictures on DU.

(17,880 posts)CVW-8 was only ever on the USS Lincoln once was far as I can tell for a shakedown cruise in 1990. The Lincoln cent design fits with other patches I've seen from that ship.

(8,879 posts)The patch makes reference to 1972 but I dont think that is a patch date as I dont think the Lincoln came on line until the Regan administration ship build up. But she is CVN72 so that may account for that.

(19,323 posts)He died in 1974. He was noted for trying to inject sensitivity into warfare, especially in Vietnam. I didn't find if he had been nicknamed Abe at any time.

(6,017 posts)Carrier Air Wing Eight (CVW-8), is a United States Navy aircraft carrier air wing. One of the ships they were deployed on was the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) from January 1990 - February 1990.

(16,273 posts)Says it's an uncommon patch.
I had no luck tracking it down, even with Google Lens, so I don't doubt it's uncommon, and I bet treasured by all who wore one.

(2,318 posts)During World War II, CVW-8 distinguished itself in combat in the Pacific, winning five Battle Stars and the Presidential Unit Citation for heroic combat action while embarked in USS Bunker Hill. The air group was disestablished on 23 November 1945 following World War II.

(19,323 posts)I don't know how military units are named, and if they retire names, continue them, or name new units.
I had read about Navy boats awhile back, and learned that sometimes there is more than one boat with the same name, but not at the same time.
