Related: About this forumNow Grannie's mad!
From a letter to the editor in the Dallas Morning News!
I appreciate Wehmeyers op-ed. Yes, Peggy, we grandmothers have become wiser with age. I have firsthand knowledge of the effects of gun violence. I recently retired as a trauma therapist, having supported dozens of families in which someone died by gunfire. My grandson, Calvin Pettitt, 25, was the teacher shot by a student while trying to defuse a fight at Mansfields Timberview High School. He survived with the bullet lodged forever near his aorta and ongoing PTSD.
Heres the thing. People of integrity can change their minds about guns, as Wehmeyer and I did. In our country today, very few, if any, people need to shoot animals in order to eat much less have the need for military-style weapons in their homes.
Wisdom and courage are required to say I was wrong about guns or anything else. Yep, grandmothers are wise, and we love our grandchildren. Many of us have money, and most of us have time. Look out for what grannies of America might do to prevent 6,000 children a year in the U.S. from dying or being injured by guns!
