How Jared Kushner And The Trump Admin Traded U.S. Foreign Policy For $2 Billion

Apr 11, 2022 #MSNBC #JaredKushner #Trump

Chris Hayes: “Essentially, the Trump administration sold U.S. foreign policy, Jamal Khashoggi's life, and American principles on liberal democracy and freedom of the press for $2 billion that went straight into Jared Kushner's pocket.”

Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners private equity fund, which is primarily backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, is set to acquire a $150 million stake in an Israeli automotive services company, marking the first Saudi-backed investment in the Jewish state.

Kushner’s fund will buy a 15% stake in the car and credit division of Shlomo Holdings, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, citing financial filings.

Shlomo began in 1974 as a small car-rental company but now also offers services to corporate auto fleets, including leasing, roadside assistance and car maintenance. The business is still family-owned, and Affinity will be Shlomo’s first outside equity investor.

The news comes as the Biden administration attempts to broker a normalization agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Trump says he stands with Netanyahu after a barrage of GOP criticism for saying he ‘let us down’

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Donald Trump said Friday that he stood with Israel and its prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, as his GOP rivals continued to pointedly denounce his lashing out at Netanyahu days after Hamas’ deadly attacks.

(snip)

That stood in stark contrast to comments earlier this week, when Trump told a rally crowd in Florida that Netanyahu had “let us down” before the U.S. killed a top Iranian general. Trump further faulted the country’s intelligence agencies, saying they needed to “step up their game,” and referred to Hezbollah, the group Israel fears may launch a large-scale attack from the country’s north, as “very smart.”

(snip)

By Thursday afternoon, Trump’s team appeared to be on damage control, sending out statements highlighting his past support for Israel. “There was no better friend or ally of Israel than President Donald J. Trump,” Trump wrote in one. He also praised the Israeli soldiers now fighting Hamas in response to the unprecedented surprise attack on Oct. 7. The war has since claimed at least 3,200 lives on both sides.

While Trump and Netanyahu worked together closely while Trump was president, Trump responded with fury after Netanyahu congratulated then-President-elect Biden for winning the 2020 election while Trump was still trying to overturn the results. In interviews for a book about his Middle East peace efforts, Trump, according to its author, used an expletive to describe the embattled prime minister — “F—- him,” he reportedly said — and faulted Netanyahu for disloyalty,

Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners investing $110M to acquire 15% of Shlomo Group's auto and credit operations

(snip)

The transaction was closed in the midst of the war in Gaza and the currently complex economic and geopolitical conditions in Israel and the Middle East. The consideration for the transaction reflects a market cap of NIS 2.7 billion (approximately $740 million) for the automotive and credit operation. Kushner received a significant discount of $40 million on the price published at the signing of the agreement in September, with the value of the activity decreasing from NIS 3.8 billion at the time of the agreement's signing to NIS 2.7 billion upon completion of the deal. This represents a decline of almost 29% in the company's value and a 12% drop in its effective market cap.

Since it was established in 2021, Affinity Partners has examined more than 1,000 companies, and made investments of more than $700 million out of the $3 billion it raised, mainly from Saudi Arabia's wealth fund.

(snip)

Under the agreement, Shlomo Group will grant Affinity Fund a loan of $46.75 million to finance the investment transaction.

(snip)

“We are excited to partner with the Shmeltzer family through our investment in Shlomo, which has continued to exhibit the same resilience as the entire country. Affinity is looking forward to more promising opportunities in Israel and the region,” Kushner said.
