(8,614 posts)Only 3 ships were non repairable (BB39 USS Arizona,BB37 USS Oklahoma,AG16 USS Utah) and in fact all the BB's that were damaged most were battle ready within a year. They failed to hit the sub pens , workshops, and fuel depots. The loss of these would mean that the islands would be unable to raise, repair, fuel or rearm the fleet.

(55,334 posts)That one got debunked last year. It's supposedly inspirational, showing women of diverse backgrounds, and make a powerful counterpoint to the Iwo Jima flagraising photo. But there were virtually no women on US naval bases prior to 1942.
Still, it tells an important story of how the war changed gender roles in America.

Surprising still to me that it is spoken of as such a shameful act considering that the Japanese only after military targets.
Surely not as inhuman of an act as the firebombing of Tokyo or the dropping of two nuclear devices on civilian populations.
