Horses Saturday * Maddie, Pete and the New Guy (NG) *

Maddie and Pete still eat in their corral as grass re-grows.

Eventually they make their way back out to their five acres.
And munch on that grass.

Yesterday the new neighbor horse was back out. I'm calling him
the New Guy (NG), presuming he's male.

He had a Brown-headed Cowbird along for the ride.

He came up to the fence and we talked. Nice horse. Friendly.

A bit later they headed out to his pasture.

Well, NG saw his neighbors at the fence and trotted back to them.

Shortly afterwards Pete walked away, Maddie followed, and
NG watched them go. And started in whinnying.

Meanwhile our two grazed.

Took Pete's pic here because I liked the look on his face.

This morning he stood in rising sun light.

Why is Maddie wearing a mask thing over her head? Can she see through it?

She can see through it, though not as clearly. I looked through one once. Somewhat diminished vision's a good trade-off for keeping flies out.

Now Pete. He's another story. Laurie has seen him rub his fly mask until it falls off. It seems he doesn't mind the flies. Eventually we'll find the mask out in the pasture and put if back on. But probably not for long.
Thank You for asking!

She raced to the fence line and commenced barking raucously at the horse.
I didn't want her to continue so I called her back.

Shadow seems somehow to feel it her duty to bark at horses. She used to really bug Maddie and Pete, but Laurie kept after her and she's gotten better. Besides,
on one occasion she got too close to Maddie, who lashed out with her hind leg. Maddie's hoof struck a small metal bark collar piece. Laurie and I heard the
thunk sound and were glad Shadow hadn't gotten hit instead.

That incident taught Shadow to back off some, however, she still likes to run up
to the horses and bark her fool head off, like today. Don't want her scaring the neighbor horse!

Thanks D_D!

Sometimes they can be so stubborn!

We got a new neighbor last summer and he has a young Pittie who is just brimming with energy and loves everybody. Whenever he takes his Pittie out to toss her a ball Sophie has to make a beeline to the fence and bark and bark. I wish I could make her understand that that’s very rude and they are good guys who are our neighbors. The last few times I told her “NO!” very sternly and she did back off but had to get the last bark in, so to speak. But every single time they are out, she does this. I hate to discourage her barking at strangers, but they are our neighbors who have lived there almost a year now.
