Ack, the deer ate my nasturtiums

I try to stick to flowers that aren’t tasty, but do love my nasturtiums. Liquid Fence has kept them safe so far, but last night one of the neighborhood livestock apparently decided Liquid Fence is a fine seasoning and left me with nothing but stubble. I’ve switched to Deer Scram.

Early in the spring, they even ate our garlic! Luckily it was early enough, and they didn’t come back for seconds, and it came back and we managed to have a good crop. But everything else is a total loss. The sprays don’t even work on our deer.

I’m impressed. I do pretty well planting flowers they don’t like, which basically means anything fuzzy, smelly, or downright poisonous. I did notice, though, that they’ve nibbled on my monks hood, which I’m pretty sure is poisonous.

Lamb’s ear, hardy hibiscus, peony, zinnias, daffodils, alyssum, allium, iris, monkshood, and the entire mint family. The mint family is surprisingly diverse and includes Russian sage and cat mint. I’ve recently added something called hummingbird mint, which has lovely pink and orange blossoms.

At least here they do. The plants they leave alone, but the flowers are apparently tasty. Same goes for petunias—they eat only the flowers.
