Has anyone in zone 4 started an asparagus bed by directly sowing seed?

I'm looking at having a bed about 42' long by 3' wide, as many in my family love asparagus, and getting crowns would be very pricey. 50 crowns would cost ten times as much as a packet of 125 seeds.

I had some old seed (probably 15 years old) that I sowed in pots, and planted after it was a few inches tall.

It transplanted well and we got asparagus out of it in maybe 2-3 years.

If you want it sooner, maybe plant a few crowns and mostly seed.
