What does it mean when the asparagus bears fruit? Can I let them ripen and harvest seeds? If so, how?

(137,262 posts)Asparagus can take three growing seasons to harvest; you may be able to lightly harvest during the second year.
For the following years, maintain the bed as in the second year and harvest only the spears thicker than a pencil.
Cut spears that are about 6 inches in length at an angle.
Asparagus freezes well.

(39,909 posts)The best and easiest way to grow Asparagus is to buy crowns from almost anywhere, even Walmart. The crowns are already 1 - 2 years old, and if you are careful, you may harvest a few spears the very next year.
The time to plant the crowns is now.
Asparagus has turned out to be one of the easiest, low-maintenance, pest free crops we grow.
We are currently in the middle of our yearly Asparagus orgy. We've been harvesting and eating Asparagus daily for about 3 weeks, and have another few weeks to go.
It just seems so WRONG..... Harvesting Asparagus.
