How do you grow strawberries?

I like a Junebearing strawberry. They grow larger and are more heat tolerant than everbearing. I plant them in a raised row and till under runners the first year. I also cut off blooms the first year so the plant can establish a good root. Strawberries require an acidic soil of 5.8 to 6.2 pH. I found pine needles are great way to lower the pH and are also a great mulch to keep your strawberry bed weed free. A cheap pH meter will give you an idea if pine needles would be your preferred mulch.

Happy gardening!
