I usually grow Walla Walla and Texas Sweet. I plant them in a raised row and spaced with enough room to grow large. I fertilize with 10 10 10 and cow manure. When the onion starts growing I pull back the soil around the bulb. The only thing you want in the soil are the roots and the bottom part of the bulb. Removing soil around the bulb allows the onion to grow unrestricted and larger. Walla Walla is a delicious sweet onion but I don't think they store as good as Texas Sweet.

(18,675 posts)Im a recent gardener and didnt know to push back the dirt 🙂
I had a crop of Walla Walla sweets last year but I had to move shortly after planting, landlady's son decided the place had to be sold immediately - long story, so I wasn't able to tend them as I should/would have.
But I didn't know about the dirt thing either.

(30,797 posts)show me how to grow sweet onions around 40 years ago. His onions were so sweet you could eat them like an apple. I hope you have good luck, the advice from the old farmer has been good to me. I wished I would have asked him more questions about gardening before he died.
