Related: About this forumCan Crisco go bad?
I am making a recipe that calls for shortening and my crisco has sat in my kitchen cupboard
for @ least 64 years and it seems a little off.
BTW making red beans and rice for my Clintonville (Columbus Ohio) neighbors Mardi Gras party
and the recipe called for shortening but my crisco seemed different. So I used some olive oil for
the vegetables, garlic, creole spices, and sausage
.andouille.

(56,725 posts)heat can accelerate it too but better off not using anyway - there are much better products out there. for sauteing vegs, your olive oil is perfect!

(1,048 posts)If it looks weird, toss it. And oil for red beans and rice is just fine.

(18,276 posts)I've seen several videos where people use it as an extra boost for lighting when the power goes out. Just stick some candles inside the shortening and light them. It keeps the room lit for quite a while.
I've seen shortening go bad/rancid it usually has an off white color.
