(6,581 posts)Is there anything I can do to help? You provided so much insight to me, and I respect you so much. No one should yell at you like that just because you can't get the bags open. I have the same problem getting those things open, just because they are difficult. People can be very inconsiderate to say the least.
No one deserves to be made to feel insignificant, or disposable. Especially a man of your intellect. You deserve better. How about your SO, is she supportive of you? Other family or friends?
Please don't be so upset, I know that is much easier said than done. Take care of yourself.

(10,420 posts)I would think that you'll have to level with your SO and tell her exactly what the problem is. It would seem rather insensitive if she knew that you had this problem with your thumbs and didn't understand or care about what you were going through trying to get those bags open.
In other words, I don't think this is all your fault. Aside from the gouging of your cheeks, it seems to me that being angry in that situation would be a perfectly normal response. Just try not to hurt yourself like that. I hear that makes some people feel better, but it's not a good deal.

(136,833 posts)Awful situation. As suggested, discuss w SO, and work on a plan to address the problem in the future. If lucky, such discussion will help with better feelings.
You may not be able to do 'simple things,' but we know you are VERY able to do complex things.

(5,158 posts)I've been there, too.. times when I feel so overwhelmed I just want to throw my hands in the air and say "to hell with it". Especially around the holidays. Sounds like your cashier could have been a little more considerate, too. I'm a cashier at a big-box store and I always bag customer's groceries for them.
I'm sorry you had such a bad experience, and I hope you know you have friends here.

Would canvas bags help? My DH has to do everything with one hand, so I'm always trying to find the things that make the tasks easier. Plastic bags are frustrating for the most able of us. Anyway, I hope the embarrassment you felt was short lived.
