Kentucky child not vaccinated against influenza dies from flu

Sarah Ladd, Kentucky LanternFebruary 08, 2025

A Kentucky child who was unvaccinated for influenza has died from the flu, the Kentucky Department for Public Health announced Friday.

This is the first pediatric flu death this season, according to the department. Nothing else about the child is known.

This comes as flu vaccination is down around the state, with 17% of Kentucky children receiving a flu vaccine this season, the department said.

Louisville health department officials said earlier Friday that nearly 3,000 children had tested positive for flu this week in Jefferson County, where fewer than 30% got their updated flu shot this season.

“Influenza is on the rise across Kentucky,” Dr. Steven Stack, Kentucky’s public health commissioner, said in a statement. “Unfortunately, viruses like influenza and COVID-19 are serious diseases that can be deadly to some people, including children. Vaccination is the best way to prevent severe illness and death.”

(Hey rfk: more dead kids?)

As a kid. He recovered and was fine . . . until about 7 years ago. You can bet he harassed and harangued all of us about getting our covid vaccines and boosters.

I'm the youngest of 34 grandchildren - it is inconceivable in my family that you wouldn't take a vaccine to prevent a death.

Involuntary manslaughter for starters.. Child neglect for sure.

Skipping a flu shot, while probably not a good idea, is hardly a reason to charge manslaughter. Heck, when kids find loaded guns and shoot and kill some other kid, or mommy, or anyone, the parents are almost never charged with anything. That's too bad. There need to be high profile cases where those who allow the access can be held responsible. Unfortunately, the gun lovers would apparently prefer endless gun deaths to any kind of sensible gun laws.

If I can talk My Son The Astronomer into taking a job in another country (and once Trump and his idiots learn that there are telescopes out there, and people who spend their entire working lives with those telescopes they will cancel all such funding.) I will try very hard to join him there.

And you know, the conspiracy theories are already flowing about who's fault and what really killed the kid. This is such a fucking waste!
