A significant increase in cases of apple disease, or
erythema infectiosum, has been reported in Tokyo, marking the highest number of infections since 1999.
796 cases were reported in the week leading up to 1 Dec 2024 based on data from
264 medical facilities. This translates to an average of
3.02 cases per facility, surpassing previous records.
Densely-populated Tokyo hosts 37,115,000 inhabitants.
Parvovirus B19 infection is usually mild in people who are otherwise healthy. Common symptoms include slapped cheek rash in children and joint pains in adults. Complications can occur among people with underlying blood disorders or weakened immune system. Infection early during pregnancy can cause a slight increase in the risk of a miscarriage.
Nearby Saitama has also reported cases of apple disease. The recent rise in cases has prompted health officials to issue warnings, especially to expectant mothers, advising caution during this outbreak. The number of infections has exceeded warning levels for the first time since 2018, signaling a need for increased awareness and preventive measures in the community.
