Idaho House passes bill to force schools and doctors to out transgender minors to their parents

Red states seem to be in a contest these days to outdo each other in passing the most oppressive laws against trans rights, and I'm afraid Idaho just might win.

https://idahocapitalsun.com/2026/03/11/idaho-house-passes-bill-to-force-schools-and-doctors-to-out-transgender-minors-to-their-parents/

The Idaho House widely passed a bill Wednesday that would require school officials and health professionals to out transgender minors to their parents, or face lawsuits.

House Bill 822 would require schools, health care providers and child care providers to notify parents within three days after the entities receive “any request by the minor student to participate in or facilitate the social transition of the minor student.”

That would include: Using a different name than their legal name, including a nickname; using pronouns or titles that don’t align with their sex assigned at birth; using restrooms, locker rooms, changing rooms, or overnight lodging that are meant to be used by another sex; and playing on a sports team of another sex.

Entities would be banned from assisting a minor’s social transition efforts without written consent from their parent. The attorney general could seek up to $100,000 in civil fines for entities that violate the bill.

I'm sure it goes without saying that if this actually gets passed by the Idaho Senate and signed into law, it will be fiercely challenged in court. But somehow that knowledge doesn't make me feel much better about watching trans people, especially trans kids, get used as a punching bag yet again.

Improving family planning education (at least enough to counter growthist propaganda that is cheapening the value of human life while phonily pretending life is sacred) or educating people about climate change, our deep ecological crisis..

I agree..Trans rights are human rights. One good thing here in India is that acceptance of the trans community is fairly common. I was rather pleased that my dad who has some conservative views (not crazy, but to my right), is very supportive of trans rights. He is a classical conservative in some ways. But he does not have outlandish fixations with other people’s lives which in no way infringe on his.

Tim Walz put it well with you stay in your lane and I in mine. That is not applicable to shared resources like the planet and society where everyone should have a say, but abortion, birth control, lgbtq rights..these are all so personal.

I think it is cool when people are different (well okay except creeps, sleazebags etc..that is a bridge too far..and that is usually who is this upset about trans rights).

Legislating against a specific group of kids like this is pretty heavy-handed. Schools and doctors are there to provide a safe environment, and forcing them into this role is going to have some real consequences for student well-being. Everyone deserves the right to exist without being used for political points.

Trans people, especially trans kids, have become the bogeyman du jour for the Republican party. It's disgusting the way the GOP is using a tiny, marginalized group to distract people from the fact that they're doing absolutely nothing constructive for the taxpayers who pay their salaries and bankroll their benefits.
