Enjoy the Day
From the New Yorker, July 3, 1970: coverage of the first NYC Pride Parade.
On June 29, 1969, city police raided the Stonewall Inn, a well-known gay bar on Christopher Street, in Greenwich Village. A gay bar is a bar frequented by homosexuals. The Stonewall was raided for alleged violations of the liquor laws, and, as is the custom, the place was cleared and many of the customers as well as the employees of the bar were arrested. For the first time in a raid on such a bar, however, the patrons did not go quietly but fought backand fought back against both the police and the bar itself. Homosexuals in New York have for a long time been harassed by policemen and exploited by bar owners. The Sunday before last, in commemoration of the events of a year ago, ten thousand homosexuals paraded from the Village, up Sixth Avenue, to the Sheep Meadow, in Central Park.

Behind the Aegis
(56,216 posts)Almost all the local and major cities decided for October. It has been so hot here in the last few years and the idiots planning the marches always go for the afternoon, they decided October, LGBT History month would be better. I agree.
I am angered by the assholes who ruined several marches, temporarily, with their pro-terrorist bullshit, and few who were likely actual pro-Palestinian protestors. Time and place seem to be lost on them. I am so fucking sick of Pride Parades being attacked by outside forces, supposedly "on our side". Fuck them!
Frankly, I have been waiting for the other shoe to drop in regard to gay rights, especially marriage equality (looking at you Texas). But until then, my energies will focus on re-electing the most queer friendly president, IMO, ever!

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
