Social media platforms including Facebook and TikTok are failing to stop hate and threats against LGBTQ users, a report issued Wednesday from advocacy group GLAAD found.
Those are some of the internet's most vulnerable users, with a majority of LGBTQ people saying they've faced menacing posts or comments when they're scrolling through social media. But it's unclear how social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and YouTube are handling those threats.
Instead of protecting their users, GLAAD says in the report, the tech companies are safeguarding information about how they respond to those attacks, revealing few details about how often they take down posts or accounts that push hate speech or harass LGBTQ users.
"The reality is, there's very little transparency and very little accountability," said Jenni Olson, GLAAD's director for social media safety and author of the report. "And people feel helpless."

(2,809 posts)Albeit not as universal as prior decades, there still are, especially comedies, in which a pair of, often two male protagonists, will play up toxic avoidance of any external veneer of affection for each other. "Ha-ha the ubiquitous observers can't perceive we might be gay, yuk yuk."
Fukk that.
I'm recovering from surgery. A lot of teevee and sleep. I just got really good news today: 2nd procedure, no cancer detected. 😅
Yet the scene I caught of two toxic males playing embarrassment of hugging in an emotionally charged moment then humorously putting out the homophobia vibez gave me a "goddammit" moment. Too medicated to recall the show, but damn, Hollywood, get over that.
I'm glad for the atmosphere that takes "his husband" and "her wife" in stride. We've come a ways, but there are still narrow, toxic dipshittery needs to be called out.
The hearings yesterday were fantastic.
But the "reformed" Trumpers in all probability still cling to the damn homophobia members of Pwoud Boiz and Ooth Kreepers swear to uphold.
The last thing our youth needs for an enlightened society is that ilk of casual ostracism, and to fully recognize it as dated and unwelcome.
Oh, and fukk Trumpism.

There has been a slight return of casual homophobia in some scripted shows, which is disappointing. Seems we make one step forward, and then have to cha-cha back.
If you are binging things, how do you feel about foreign language programs? There are some really good ones on various platforms. Many don't have a LGBT element to them, but are still pretty good.

(2,809 posts)The entire last week drifting in and out of consciousness at best with drainage in to remain undisturbed. I don't think I was hardly able to catch even a whole simple plot of a show.
Just recall grumbling at a snippet of a "assume everyone is hetero" scenario in some laugh-track serial, groan at the premise and back to sleep.
Now with drainage out removed, I won't be in such a high dosed haze. I can get back to the novel I started prior to surgery and...

(1,962 posts)I think over the years I alerted on 35-40 posts spewing hatred and bigotry for LGBTQ's and drag queens - some of which even included violence (either direct threats or encouraging someone to use "vigilante justice" . Do you know how many got removed? 0.
Each and every time, Assbook's staff would see the hateful posts and not see a thing wrong with them.
Meanwhile, my dad got 30 days in Assbook Jail for "Tucker Carlson should be taken behind the woodshed" and other posts blasting the QOP. Our very own Dweller posted on the 3rd that they got a month in Assbook Jail for the "Take the Clorox challenge!" picture that they posted in 2020. My roommate got 30 days in Jail (later overturned) for ranting and raving about the Highland Park shooting, saying "These motherfuckers are trying to shoot us all!"
But threats to attack drag queens and wanting to kill transgenders and general bigotry? ALL GOOD!
I would say these social media platforms don't care, but that'd be a lie. They're all pretty right-wing, both in membership and ownership. This is why the problem is so bad, and getting worse here in 2022. People know they are free to post all the hateful shit they want, and it's us that have to watch our step. A total and blatant case of "freedom of speech for me, not for thee!"
It's also why some of us don't believe Elon Muskrat one bit on his plans for Twitter. There's no doubt that he'll allow all the hate and bigotry and threats in the world... Meanwhile, expect everyone who dares to post a rainbow flag or trans pride flag to be shown the door, immediately.
Assbook, Twit-ter, TikTok, et al., are not our friends. Nor are they friendly or safe places for us to be.
