Emily Bridges: Transgender cyclist will not race in women's National Omnium event

Transgender cyclist Emily Bridges will not compete at Saturday's National Omnium Championships in her first women's event after a ruling by cycling's world governing body.

The 21-year-old looked set to face some of the sport's biggest names, including five-time Olympic champion Laura Kenny.

However, British Cycling said in a statement on Wednesday: "We have now been informed by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) that under their current guidelines Emily is not eligible to participate in this event."

And now the part that made me yell WTF out loud, UCI president David Lappartient who is making this decision expresses the opinions of un-named 'experts'.

"When I speak with some professors in medicine, some specialists, they say, 'yes, your body probably has a memory already of what you are and so there is maybe some advantages'.

"But is there a memory from your body from what you were before - and do you have advantage for this? Is it a bridge of fair competition?"

Don't you just love it when people who have no clue about what others are going through want to tell everyone what they are going through?

And this has nothing to do with what she is going through, which likely has been difficult physically and mentally.
It's about whether it is an unfair advantage. And this post is not making a judgement on that.

And the audacity of the claims from un-named 'professional' in the field of other people's life.
Maybe I didn't make that clear.

This is a group, not a forum. Groups often serve as safe havens for members who share similar interests and viewpoints...

LGBT (Group): About This Group
Statement of Purpose

A group for LGBT DUers and allies. All topics of interest to the LGBT community are welcome.

Just something to consider if you're thinking of bringing up "biology", "chromosomes", "science", or the usual buzzwords.

And those words are not just buzzwords.
Chromosomes likely not relevant.
I believe biology and science are.
If a trans woman had the viewpoint (and I'm not saying I do) that she should not be allowed to compete, or that it is an advantage, would it be OK for her to express it in this group. And just because I posted what I did does not mean I am not an ally.
The kind of dancing I do, contra dancing, welcomes and has many participants everywhere on the gender spectrum, including trans, and everyone is welcomed.
