Grooming: The ubiquitous buzzword in LGBTQ school debate

Proponents of restrictions on how U.S. public schools address sexual orientation and gender identity say their ultimate goal is to allow parents more involvement in their childrens education and ensure classroom materials are age-appropriate.
But in heated debates at school board meetings and in statehouses across the country, the argument they repeatedly put forth is that they are trying to prevent children from being groomed the same term commonly used to describe how sex offenders initiate contact with their victims.
The use of such rhetoric, opponents of the new laws argue, underscores a nationwide push by conservatives to make education a political wedge issue by equating certain teaching materials and educators with pornography and even pedophilia. This latest trend is another volley in the countrys ongoing culture wars, during which conservative lawmakers also have opposed the teaching of critical race theory and proposed bills requiring schools to post all course materials online so parents can review them.

DeSantis never uttered the word groom, but his press secretary, Christina Pushaw, remarked on Twitter that the legislation dubbed by opponents as the Dont Say Gay bill would be more accurately described as an Anti-Grooming Bill.
The use of the term is an attempt to distort the goal of teachers who are being intentional about expressing their acceptance of LGBTQ people, or perhaps sharing their own stories ... so that all students can know that they have representation within the school, said Casey Pick, a senior fellow for advocacy and government affairs at the Trevor Project, a nonprofit that provides support services for LGBTQ youth.

(1,962 posts)Framing the dialogue. Far too often they sit back and let the QOP frame the dialogue, let them taint words or phrases, then we're left playing catchup to get the point across.
The latest example is indeed the use of "grooming" to paint a target upon people who support and care for and provide care for trans youth. That is not what that fucking word means at all. Yet, here we are, while the media lets this go on without any pushback. They know it's a dirty word, and painting harmless people with it will only lead to targeting them.
For once, I'd love to see our side frame the dialogue.

(10,403 posts)They are grooming children ala Matt Gaetz. Grooming kids into the church via pastors and priests. Shit I saw this post on reddit not long ago of a young man grooming a 16 year old girl when he was 19 to be a subservient wife. Its absolutely fucking disgusting

Call trans allies "groomers" while the likes of Gaetz actually groom.
Call progressives "snowflakes" while they throw tantrums because the election didn't go how they wanted, and minorities exist.
Accuse Biden of stealing the election when it sure looks like Drumpf did in 2016 (at least sure as hell tried both times).
And so on...
Grooming is indeed disgusting. Which is exactly why they're now using that word to get us targeted even further.
