And some coworkers had attitudes about vegetarians and vegans. I asked some why that was any different than cooking steak to well or any other customer choice that they would not make themself.

I put items on the menu that could be either vegan or vegetarian depending on what is added. Southwestern quinoa grain bowl with pico de gallo, avocado, and black beans. Optional sour cream and cheddar.

The GM made me keep pasta primavera on the menu even though it wasn't selling (and it wasn't spring time). SHE was the one ordering it. All good. I get paid to cook -- not to tell other people what to eat.

Q: How can you tell if someone is a vegan?

A: Just listen, they will tell you, even if the discussion is about truck tires.

Just a little good nature humor. As I said, meme's.

While I'm just one of those omnivores supposedly destroying the planet one hamburgler at a time, I have both vegan's and vegetarians in my family. It makes holiday's interesting. We always make what we can vegan (breads are easy, dessert's are tricky but we have had good success), or vegetarian, depending on the guests coming. Luckily our family vegan's aren't steadfast about things like honey or sugar.

But one of the vegetarians is what I'd term militant. She insists that food be separated by at least 3 feet, and nobody can even have an offending food on their plate when they stop at a vegetarian dish. She gets a lot of eye rolls. You will know she is vegetarian pretty quickly in a social setting. The vegans are actually more subdued in this crowd. They ask questions about the actual food, but don't pontificate unless asked.

And then there was this time I was checking into a nice hotel, and just asked the receptionist if she new of a good sushi restaurant so I could get dinner. She gave me this look like I just asked her for anal sex and said "I'm a vegetarian, how would I know". Not so much as a question, but a seathing statement. Now i don't really care, but as a top tier hotel front line rep, she could have at least been more polite and said something neutral and looked it up.

So not all vegans/vegetarians are militant, but the loud ones make the stereotype.

Again, apologies. Didn't mean to offend anyone.

When I am out with friends, or on a date, the companions usually try to order vegetarian. If they don't, I don't get upset.
If they ask whether it is OK, I say that I wish everyone was vegetarian of course, but you should order whatever you'd like.
If they want to try my dish, I will just ask not to use a utensil that has been used for meat. If they just go ahead without asking and use a "meat utensil", I will say nothing, nor be offended.
Peace

For too many - it isn't enough to explain why they make the dietary decisions they do. They have to claim that deep down, you know the ones you make are evil.

Translation - "you hate us because your hate yourself. All we're doing is holding up the mirror"

have implemented a lot in my diet. I have met some real asses, and hear real asses on social media with their nasty judgment with people that are not. That is a turn off. I also see a lot of stupid people try shoving meat in their face and think they are equally asses.

Not eating meat and animal derived foods is a personal choice people make based on a variety of different reasons. I had been a vegetarian for many years, but I started reading meta nutrition studies that seemed to suggest the more animal foods one includes in their diets, the higher the incidence of many different kinds of diseases, from heart disease, to autoimmune diseases, to various types of cancer. Colin T Campbell’s book The China Study also pointed this fact out. So 9 years ago I stopped eating eggs and dairy as well. I did this on my own, with little support, and for many reasons I’m glad I did. However, once I connected with other local people who were also vegan I understood that there are a number of vegans who can be very judgmental in what other people eat and can be incredibly sanctimonious about their personal eating habits. I think those loudmouths are actually not the majority of vegans, but they have been influential in making the public dislike vegans and plant-based diets. Personally I don’t really care what other folks eat, but I love being asked questions about my diet, the choices I’ve made and the reasons for my choices. Over the last 2 years I began incorporating a weekly serving of wild caught salmon or sardines to help guard against getting pernicious anemia which runs in my family. I’d say my diet is 98% plant based and I will never eat eggs or dairy foods for the rest of my life, but I’d never push my choices on anyone.

It is the self righteous attitude.

I actually think that a vegetarian diet is healthy if you know what you're doing, and is easy to justify for ethical and environmental grounds.

However, I will eat what I want. My food tastes better than a vegetarian diet. If you don't agree, you are kidding your self.

Whether a dish containing meat or dairy is tastier than a dish that is 100% plant-based is completely subjective. For instance, I personally find the smell and taste of butter repulsive, even when I was eating meat a long time ago. It’s subjective. Your statement that I’m” kidding myself” if I don’t agree that meat dishes are tastier, which I don’t, is purely subjective. Taste is in the mouth of the beholder.

Which is probably why I had no problem becoming one.

It is true there is a vocal minority of vegans who believe anti-meat evangelization should be part of the vegan lifestyle. But should people hate all Christians because of Mormons who go door to door?

I honestly think a lot of the antipathy toward vegans stems from fear and ignorance. What skin off your nose is it if someone else chooses to eat differently than you?

Anyway, enjoy the bird flu-contaminated dairy milk, haters.

we have had run ins with vegans who are just as obnoxious in their way as fundamentalist Christians. (As a side note, I have also had good conversations with non militant vegans). Eat what you enjoy, and let others eat what they enjoy.

present themselves as special - and that is not just vegans. If they do not announce they are vegans - no problem. It's like when people announce they are Christian. What is that supposed to mean to anyone else? Why even mention it?
