M1 Rail names American contractor for six Detroit streetcars
DETROIT, MI - The $140 million M1 Rail project has named Brookville Equipment Corporation to design and build six individual streetcars.
M1 Rail is buying the six vehicles, along with parts and support services, from the Brookville, Pa.-based company for $32 million, according to a release.
The streetcars from Brookville Equipment are expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2016. They'll be equipped with vertical bike racks, WiFi wireless internet and HVAC systems to accommodate Southeast Michigan's wide-ranging weather. They will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Brookville Equipment, a 97-year-old locomotive, streetcar and mining company, provided similar, off-wire streetcars for the Dallas Area Rapid Transit system. M1 Rail had previously entered into negotiations with a firm from the Czech Republic to provide the cars, but those talks fell through. .....................(more)
