Why Honda is going all in on fuel cell tech
Hondas latest move marks a significant investment in its hydrogen-powered future.
AutoBlog.com | ELIJAH NICHOLSON-MESSMER | DEC 19, 2024
Honda announced plans this week to establish a dedicated production facility for its next-generation hydrogen fuel cell systems. Set to begin operations by March 2028, the new plant will be located in Moka, Japan, repurposing part of the automakers former Powertrain Unit Factory. With a projected annual production capacity of 30,000 units, the factory represents a major milestone in Hondas push toward a hydrogen-based future.
Betting on a hydrogen future
The upcoming plant will feature cutting-edge production equipment designed to enhance efficiency and ensure high-quality output, Honda said in a statement. Hondas new fuel cell systems are being developed in-house, underscoring the companys commitment to technological independence.
This facility is the first of its kind for Honda and is expected to receive government subsidies under Japans Green Transformation (GX) initiative, a program aimed at achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
This plant will support four key domains Honda has identified for fuel cell technology, including passenger fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), commercial vehicles, stationary power stations, and construction machinery. By 2030, Honda aims to capture 5% of the hydrogen-powered truck market, with aspirations to increase that share to 30% by 2040...more

Honda is building FCEV's with GM in Ohio right now.
Not a lot of discussion about that. Why?

Honda and Hydrogen
As the worlds largest engine supplier, Honda has always taken a serious approach to addressing challenges to reduce CO2 emissions and to achieve zero CO2 emissions, considering those as challenges we must overcome.
While facing such challenges, Honda became one of the first companies to focus on the potential of hydrogen energy and began fundamental research of fuel cell technologies in the second half of the1980s, which was followed by the research and development of fuel cell vehicles.
And now, we are ready to utilize our fuel cell technologies to a wide variety of applications and make even more proactive contribution to the pursuit of carbon neutrality for our society.

Someone may suggest that Honda "doesn't know thermodynamics"
Think for even a second how absolutely idiotic that would be.

(13,591 posts)1. Fuel Cells are like a steam engine. A little wonky, but great as a backup to batteries.
I would still prefer recharging while driving over electro-magnetic charging.
Although, stopping to put in a couple of cylinders is not too bad and easier to transition from gas to non-fossil fuel.
