Unionized Starbucks employees conducted a one-day strike outside two Omaha locations Tuesday morning to advocate for better working conditions.
Baristas and shift supervisors held signs near two closed Starbucks stores; one at 72nd and Dodge Streets, the other at 120th Street and West Center Road.
Protestors, who included Omaha members of the Democratic Socialists of America, numbered at more than a half-dozen at each location by mid-morning Tuesday. The two Starbucks stores are the only ones in Omaha where the workforce is unionized, organizer and Starbucks shift supervisor Gadget Sansom said.
The strikes in Omaha are part of a larger nationwide strike that began Friday in Los Angeles, Chicago and Seattle. By Monday, the organized labor strike had spread to Starbucks stores in Boston, Dallas and Portland, Oregon and caused nearly 60 Starbucks stores to close.
