WASHINGTON (WCAX) - Vermont Sen. Peter Welch is calling for free and fair elections in this month’s upcoming presidential election in Guatemala.

The country has a history of leaders abusing their authority, and Welch says he hopes the presidential election offers some opportunity for the Guatemalan people to forge a new path.

“Nearly three decades after the end of an internal armed conflict in which the army methodically carried out a scorched Earth campaign killing an estimated 200,000 Indigenous Guatemalans, the Guatemalan people deserve better,” Welch, D-Vermont, said in a statement. “Just as they need leaders who care more about solving the country’s problems than holding onto power and lining their pockets, the United States needs a credible partner in Guatemala.”

He also says the election will determine whether people can live in the country safely or continue to flee to seek a better life in the U.S.
