Howard Dean's second act: Campaigning and more campaigning

Howard Dean is most famous for two things: His ill-fated run for president in 2004 (which some think was stymied by a bad microphone) and paving the way for Barack Obama's 2008 victory by using the internet for fundraising. "As every alert citizen knows, Dean has used the Net to raise more money than any other Democratic candidate," Gary Wolf of Wired magazine wrote in January of 2004. "He's also used it to organize thousands of volunteers who go door-to-door, write personal letters to likely voters, host meetings, and distribute flyers."

But these days, the former Vermont governor and head of the Democratic National Committee has a job besides campaigning for himself or holding office: He's campaigning for his fellow Democrats. He's campaigning in Illinois on behalf of Ilya Sheyman, who is running against Brad Schneider in the the March 20th primary for the 10th Congressional District.

i was at a dfa fundraiser, and they sold quite a few of the vip tickets. not sure how ilya did last night. i had tickets but i didn't go. used up all my energy.

...the latest polling I could find had him up on Schneider slightly. Hope we pull this one off - it'll be a big boost going into 2012.

I met him briefly a few years ago when he was in Rochester, NY campaigning for Eric Massa (Well, that is another story) I had just gotten married to a woman I met in Qingdao, China and she had only been in the US maybe a year. It was her first chance to meet an 'American politician.'
After telling her a little about him, I introduced myself and her to him, and in spite of the large crowd of deep pocketed people, he took several minutes to speak with her, ignoring all the others wanting to shake his hand and 'be seen."
He was truly interested in meeting her, not because he was there to raise money, but interested in her as a person, and he was very patient with her imperfect, but quite clear, English. Soon people nearby started to listen to their conversation .. it was quite touching.

Later she asked if he were typical American politician. I said , "No. You are very lucky. You have met a very special one."

I said I had volunteered and he took the time to acknowledge me while ignoring all the people who just wanted to "be seen."

Howard is very special like that.
