Records obtained by mySA.com reveal a man died last summer after getting stuck in quicksand on the San Antonio River and drowning in South Texas.
The extremely rare quicksand case, which previously went unreported by news outlets, is the only one of its kind in at least five years in Texas, according to records detailing the 580 deaths that occurred on rivers and lakes in that time period, obtained from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

This happened in 2015, but I never heard of it. I never hear of anyone dying from quicksand, (except in the movies) but it happened in South Texas of all places!

(2,393 posts)Slow, gentle movements in QS generally are the best way of escaping. When you thrash around, you'll be pulled down by the vortices that you create, and once pulled down, it is difficult to surface. Best solution is to divest yourself of heavy clothing and packs, as most people naturally float when not encumbered.
Metaphorical
(2,393 posts)that quicksand tends to form in flash flooding situations, where water does not have the opportunity to drain naturally. This adds slow moving currents to the mix. More than likely, what did the guy in was getting caught up in the flash flood then inhaling the silt laden muddy water. Parts of Colorado, where I have friends, are very similarly - very dry most of the time, but flash floods can turn deadly there quickly.
