Two men have been arrested in Indias capital city of New Delhi for using monkeys to threaten and rob unsuspecting victims, police said on Saturday. Last month, a victim reached out to authorities after three men with monkeys surrounded him as he was traveling in south Delhi. He was robbed of 6,000 rupees ($80, 67), according to local media outlets.
"When the victim was sitting in an autorickshaw, the men also entered (the vehicle) and asked one monkey to sit on the front seat and another at the back," a local police official told the AFP news agency. "They took the money the lawyer had in his wallet and fled with the monkeys." As it was a "strange case involving monkeys, a dedicated team was constituted to catch the culprits." Two perpetrators were arrested with their animal accomplices at a bus stop on Thursday. The third thief, Ajay, has not been apprehended.
The monkeys have been sent to an animal rescue center.
"A case has been registered under Indian Penal Code Sections 392 for robbery at Malviya Nagar police station. Relevant provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act have been added against the accused in the case," said Delhis Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Atul Kumar Thakur. Several urban areas in India have been struggling to deal with the menace posed by monkeys, which often enter homes in search of food and attack unsuspecting victims. However, under a 1972 law, it is illegal to capture the animals. ~

(17,044 posts)I would be raising holy hell if monkeys were coming into my house and stealing my food. Those damn monkeys need to be taken out. The problems are just going to get worse until they repeal that stupid law and allow people to do something about those pests.

(17,044 posts)They could never capture all those monkeys and take them off to some wilderness area. It would cost a lot of money, for one thing, and other people don't appreciate having loads of monkeys dumped on them. I guess the best thing to do is to shoot them all with lethal darts. Sure, it would be a war, but that's what they have now. The authorities could set a bounty on each monkey corpse people bring in. There aren't really any humane solutions to the problem, none that I could think of.

(11,940 posts)of them stealing the credit card from someone's wallet, well that is them. In Thailand we were always told to keep things zipped in a backpack or on our person because the steal. When I was in Sri Lanka a bunch of them came onto our hotel balcony and stole what they could get their hands on. Signage in the rooms said to never leave your patio doors open as they will come in the rooms and steal items. They were not guided by humans but I would guess that they are easily trained by humans to do many things.
