(6,332 posts)As you probably know, potatoes were introduced into Ireland in the late 1500s. Potatoes are originally from South America and were brought to Europe by Spanish and other explorers. Lore has it that Raleigh/Drake brought the potato to England and Ireland.

Actually Sir Walter Raleigh was the brother in law of my 11 or 12 times great grandmother. You will know though that the potato has a special place in Irish history. Tayto crisps are another Irish institution. Raleigh is supposed to have landed the spuds in Youghal, where many years later Moby Dick was filmed.

(6,332 posts)My family were very early settlers in current North Carolina in the mid 1600s -- first to Virginia, then moved slightly south. I grew up along the NC coast, the site of Raleigh's Lost Colony. Our state capitol, Raleigh, is named after him, although he never traveled anywhere near here. An interesting relative.

Oh..and the OP should read 8 pounds a bag...a pound is the main form of currency in UK..
now 1.3 dollars ...equals one pound in English Money.........then 8 pounds = 8 times 1.3...that equal approximately $10.50 in our money.... thank you..
