I really miss my old solitaire games package with Windows 7.

Now that we've been kicked onto Windows 10 apparently the only way to play games like solitaire, mahjong, minesweeper, etc., is to get an account somewhere and 'download the app' onto your machine and then 'sign in' to your account when you want to play.

There do seem to be a few browser-based games that can be played offline or without an account somewhere, but what I'm looking for are the old-fashioned, click the program name and have the game open and play it whether you have your Wi-fi enabled or not. Or your ethernet cable plugged in or not.

Sometimes in the middle of a complex, detail-oriented task, my brain seizes up and I just need to set the timer and open a game and let the brain detox on mechanical clicking for 10-15 minutes.

Usually when I'm working offline, which I do fair to middling often when I have those complex, detail-oriented tasks piling up. I douse the Internet so I won't be tempted to check email, and no "notifications" will distract me.

I suppose I could buy a dedicated solitaire-playing device, but I actually miss the old Win7 solitaire suite.

Does anyone know of a way to replace it?

sadly,
Bright

I play the Solitaire game that came with my Win. 10. BUT:

I don't have an account.

No signing in or other hoopla.

I had to struggle to get the game I want to play. And there are ads. YUCK.

I mute the ads and wait the few seconds that they play to return to the next game.

I keep getting messages about "don't you want to be more social?" or some other flimsy come-on, and I ignore them as best I can.

It works although I also miss the way it was on Win 7.

I am reasonably content.

I mostly don't mind them. I do find it amazing that people like that stuff! I have ZERO interest in what they're hawking.

Has Classic Solitaire, Spider, Free Cell, Pyramid and TriPeaks. I don't have to sign in to use it, I just click on the icon. Sometimes I have to tolerate some ads for other games, but I think the alternative is to go the pay route.

I honestly don't remember how I initially accessed it but I'm pretty "App" primitive so it was probably just a simple download.

and it's ad-free. It doesn't allow for keeping score, but for a quick break between chores it works for me.

They also have a Solitaire suite and a Spider Solitaire suite available free.

On any XP machine (or somewhere you can download the files on the net) find and save the following two files together in the same folder:

SOL.EXE
CARDS.DLL

Then just click SOL.EXE to start your solitaire game.

(On an XP machine, the files are located in the C:WindowsSystem32 folder.)

I moved off of Windows many years ago. Missed Solitaire afterwards but found a program in Linux called "Pysol" which has tons of solitaire type games. Its name has since changed to Pysolfc (Fan Club) and is apparently available for Windows. I know nothing about the Windows version other than it exists. As with any Windows download do scan for viruses if you seek it out and download. I have the Linux version installed on my system and it works fine.

But I think this is your solution. (Totally grok where you're coming from)

http://www.usefulspace.net/MyPix/Cards.zip

The zip contains the XP versions of Solitaire, Free Cell and Spider. Plus the dll needed to run them on Win 10 - Cards.dll.

usefulspace.net is my web space and it's exactly that: useful space for sending and collecting files in my work days; posting pix, files etc for DU. I'll leave it up for a couple of days, but I'm happy to up it again, or email if anyone needs it.

Keep the files together in their unzipped folder. I store in in my D drive in a folder of no-install games. They all work fine for me, just as they did on XP. I'm now using Win 10 and they work well.
