Capturing a still from a video

I have a homemade video of Christmas's from years gone by. Is there a method to capture and create a still picture on my laptop from this video?

If so you can pause the vid on the image you want then do a print screen (shift/command/4). It then comes up as a screenshot on the desktop. Open the screenshot in preview and crop it to what you want and then save.. Sounds a bit involved but it's easy peasy quick

If you can't view the vid on your mac, play it on the device you can view it on, pause and take a pic with your digital camera or phone. Transfer it to your mac and play with it.. enjoy

3. I use VLC Media Player for converting video formats, but it can take a snapshot image of a frame too.

I haven't used it on OS X, but it is supported (and free) (double check version that matches your OS):

In the Windows version, there is a button with a camera icon that will save the current frame as an image file when clicked. I assume it works the same on a Mac.
