OK, so my Mom has my older mac (2nd generation aluminum) and the sound went out

a few weeks ago. The start up sound would still happen, but no audio.

Now it won't start at all. It says it's updating, is 0% finished, and not to turn it off.

She is an avid poster on another board and I fear this is depressing her. I have no idea what it is, or what to do.

Can anyone help?

System? Other software?

Mac won't update without you telling it to update.
