that I could quit by clicking on safari on the bottom of the screen, before that it was the only way I could get the ball to go away was to power down. I also have shut down the proper way also.

I found, by looking at my CPU usage, that my MacBook was using a tremendous amount of CPU searching for a printer that was nowhere in the vicinity. I had no idea that it was doing that. Once I turned that function off, everything went back to normal.

I cleaned up all of the icons I don't use and trashed them. Guess I need to check all of the programs I don't use and trash them too.

and delete the "WebpageIcons.db" file.

This is the file that store all the webpage previews you see if you go into your History in Safari. The file gets very big very quickly, and when it does, you get slowdowns and freezes. And not just in Safari, it can affect other applications as well.

I was getting a lot of beach balls when my hard drive started going bad. Checking the hard drive under Disk Utility told me it was getting SMART errors and should be replaced.

That's an old version of Safari (the current one is 5.1.2). Are you using 10.6.8 or something older?

Have you launched Activity Monitor to see if something is running that you're not aware of that's sucking up memory?

How many applications do you have open when this happens?

Have you run Disk Utility?

I'm running 3 PPC macs on leopard OSX 10.5.8 and they run very well. If your mac is only 6 years old there may be some life left in it if it will run leopard

down intermittently and, just recently, airport just turns off and won't turn back on without a reboot.

So, I am looking at both the MacBookPro and Air (leaning towards the Pro).

Other members have posted positive things about refurbished models, but I am not sure that I will he happy unless it is fresh out of the box spanking new.

In the meantime, being something of a cheapskate, I am just putting up with the annoying quirks my current snowflake is exhibiting.

My MacBook Pro was doing weird shit (PS would crash when I tried to use Type Tool, etc) so that's what I did. Long story short: my HD is cooked from overuse, but I can still use MBP after:

Copying my entire HD to a backup disk
Using another MBP to start mine in Target mode and run Disk Utility to fix what it could
Reinstall Snow Leopard on my machine
Transfer data back from back up disk to my machine

Some of this will take forever, especially if you're using USB (I have a FireWire external, thanks be) and not everyone is married to an Apple software engineer and has extra MBPs lying around ... but it can be any working Mac to use to boot yours in Target mode.

Oh - before doing all that, see how much space you have free on your HD. If you're having to use to much virtual memory because you've got to little free memory, that'll cause problems. Ideally, you should have 10GB free.

For the life of me, I can not put my hands on my start up discs, so this has limited my ability to address the problem.

And I am only using about 50% (51 GB available) of the space on my HD, so i don't think that's the problem.

To be honest, I did spill a cup of hot tea on it a while back. I have sugar crystals in my screen and the problems began happening after that, so I must take some responsibility for all of this.

And deep down inside, I would love to have a new Mac. I just have to justify the expense.

If you felt adventurous, you could remove your keyboard and do a little cleaning. There's directions on line for taking 'em apart.

The new MPBs are gorgeous. I got a desktop because I have an iPad and don't need a portable full computer anymore, but it was a tough choice. The Airs are really nice, but I like being able to burn CDs/DVDs.

And I'm sure you've been good this year and deserve one

I know I have a replacement (in case I totally screw this one).

I indulged in a WII for my birthday present. I am loving the games, the Netflix streaming and have recently been using the Dance disc for my daily exercise. It is a great item to have in a small space like a boat. So.... have I been good enough to buy yet another piece of technology. That is where I am still struggling.

resetting Safari. But now Safari quits while loading some pages. Like today it has quit every time I load the Detroit Free Press news site. Seems to happen on different pages on different days.

Any thoughts on this problem?

Unless I get ino it via another page, like a google news article.

It is the only site I have problems with.

This has been the first time I ever had that problem with the Freep.

Does Safari quit on you too? Have to wait 3 or 4 minutes before you can connect to web?

Bu5 can get it back on - no problem unless I go to Freep again.

I've been having a lot of trouble with Safari crashing as well. I think the problem is with Flash, but I haven't been able to figure out what to do. I'm running 10.4.11, so I'm going to try updating to 10.6 and make sure everything is updated.
