(775 posts)I can say that I have had great success with it, and, also not so great experiences other times. It really all depends on which Windoze app you are trying to run, and which vintage Windoze you are trying to emulate.
These days, I have not needed to run anything Windoze, except for the occasional setup code that comes with a techno-thingy, and which assumes everyone runs Windoze.

NET Framework 3.5 is Wine "platinum," for example.

Wine goes most wrong with proprietary software developed with highly proprietary tools, generally those developers who have signed hefty NDAs with Microsoft.
I rarely have any use for this kind of proprietary software and all the computer games I'm interested in are very old so Wine mostly "just works" for me.
Sometimes I must resort to a modern Windows machine to set up devices like printers or radios. I find this highly annoying. The Windows machine I use for those purposes was retrieved from an e-waste bin and is registered to a fictional biscuit company.

(390 posts)the ignorance displayed towards Open Source and Linux in this so called "progressive" forum is staggering sometimes.
Wine does not claim to run "every" bit of Windows software but what it does run is amazing. I've used it for various programs for many years and for the most part it works well.
I ran a Windows based customer invoicing software for my home based business for many years using Wine and Linux. It worked nicely and I never had an issue with it. I've run many games over the years using it and most ran fine. Once in a while I hit one that didn't but not often.
Wine is underneath the Steam based Proton software. Steam allows Linux users the ability to run thousands of games.

Microsoft is absolutely one of the worst companies on the planet. Wine allows you a chance to break free from their market monopoly. It might not run every thing but it sure does run a lot.
I haven't used Windows since the late 90's thanks to Open Source, Linux, and Wine. You can too.
