What did I do now?!
Not a huge thing, but the 'speakers' icon that I click on to control volume has quit working. The other icons beside it still work, but when I click on the speakers the usual control window doesn't appear, nothing happens. The computer still gives sounds for other functions, I just can't access volume control. Any ideas about what I did to cause this, maybe fix it?
TIA, as always.

(4,044 posts)Did this happen before or after the "update"?
When initially installing the machine did you ever have to load any software or drivers to get the speakers working?

(16,081 posts)I noticed it after the update, but can't guarantee it was working before that.
Went into settings and made sure sound is on; checked a video and sound works, I just can't control the volume separately.

(4,044 posts)Right click on the sound icon.
Select open sound settings.
If there is more than one listed, make sure the correct one has the green checkmark, which denotes the default sound device.
If it is incorrect, click on the correct device, then click set default.

Type "control mmsys.cpl sounds" and press Enter.

(23,613 posts)The first to go is speakers. It was a Lenovo all in one about 5 years old. The computer guy told me that computers now only last about 5 years if youre lucky.
I tried reinstalling the sound drivers and updating the software no luck.

(18,260 posts)Assuming you are using Win 10 or 11, try this.
Go to Settings
Click on System
Click on Sound
At top, Choose where to play sound...
Check that Speakers are selected
Then click on Speakers
Next page - check that apps and Windows allowed to use device (top option General)
see how you go with that and get back....

(16,081 posts)Just got back to the computer after a trip to the laundromat followed by light supper. At this point, my evening meds have kicked in, and I've learned to avoid anything remotely technical as I fade. I will definitely revisit this tomorrow when coffee will have worked its magic. Thanks for answering, hope all is well with you!
