A Toronto-based Syrian childrens choir will not be travelling to the United States to perform at an international festival due to fears about crossing the border under the Trump administrations travel ban, its founder said Saturday.
Fei Tang, general manager of the Nai Kids Choir, says a chorus of about 60 Canadian newcomers between the ages five and 15 declined an invitation to perform at the Serenade! Choral Festival in Washington, D.C., next week.
Tang says most of the choir members immigrated to Canada within the last two years, and some parents worried that travel documents from their home country would raise red flags under a U.S. policy that bans travellers from five majority-Muslim countries: Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen.

Tang says the choir is meant to be a therapeutic way for the children to learn Canadas official languages through song, and she didnt want to risk re-traumatizing them if U.S. officials denied them entry.

(4,331 posts)I am encouraging my snow bird friends to not go to the USA this year. I no longer winter in Florida. Recently my snowbird friend said they are torn because they dont want to feed trump's economy by going to Florida. It is getting worse In her eyes. The hostage children is very disturbing.
The choir not going is a wise decision.

(22 posts)There's Mexico and Cuba. provided one doesn't plan to drive. (Especially to Cuba.) Mexico has developed numerous tourist areas and I hear Cuba can be fairly inexpensive, though rather challenging,
Of course, both require passports and visas that one doesn't encounter going to the states. At least, not yet, but barring a posterior orifice like Trump, those are usually only a minor hassle.
