Liberals hatch plan to stop Trumpism: fix income inequality

By SUSAN DELACOURT at the Toronto Star

In The Economist’s special New Year’s issue, “The World in 2018,” Freeland has penned an article about how Canada plans to battle global trends toward nationalism and protectionism.

She calls it “progressive internationalism” and describes how Canada will be pursuing this idea in 2018 on two tracks: internationally, in the realms of human rights, immigration and freer trade; and domestically, with fairer taxation and improved labour standards here in Canada.

The two tracks work together, Freeland says. Canadians won’t support immigration, rights and trade if they feel they’re paying an unfair price at home.

“Progressive trade is not a feint or a frill,” she writes. “It is fundamental to the furtherance of a trading system that will enjoy popular support.”

Let's hope it works in practice and Ottawa doesn't capitulate to Trumpy.

and 1/2 went racist/nationalist. Disraeli and all. I wonder if that was intentional on the part of the GOP? Probably. That implies they always knew trickle down was bullshit and would result in inequality then anger at 'the other' in the base. And people voting against their own best interests.

from reading 'The Rise of the New Global Elite' she wrote for The Atlantic in 2011. Quite an impressive eye opener.

"The working class can kiss my ass, I'm in the boss's chair at last" is Freeland's tune.

And if Trudeau gave two shits about inequality he wouldn't have loosened the restrictions placed on the TFW program, looking to privatize literally ANY new infrastructure project and be searching for a China FTA.

Honestly people.

The only reason inequality has made any kind of a change is largely due to the Childcare benefit. I think the benefit is a good idea to help people out of poverty, but it is NOT the government battling inequality by any measure and does not give them bragging rights that they are solving inequality. It is actually the government subsidizing their rich friends underpaying and hoarding money. It's just buying silence on inequality.

You know all those jobs they are boasting were created? the majority are part time.

The liberals still won't go after offshore tax havens and you won't see a significant increase to any corporate taxes with Morneau as finance minister. It has been only a slight deviation from the direction Harper had us going.

the "he didn't break the law" excuse is becoming a tired and pathetic excuse by Canadian politicians. There's a moral standard politcians also should meet.

Dude. They are pretty much the Tories with a better front man. The Infrastructure Bank? Good god. It's the largest privatization scheme in the history of the country. The Tories never would have gotten away with it. Not to mention their constant picking on British Columbia's environment.

They expanded the TFW program after the Tories were forced to reign it in, they broke their promise on electoral reform, they broke their promise on a second, proper, environmental review of the Trans Mountain pipeline, they are ethically challenged, they have no concept of how dangerous China is, all their "progressive" moves on gender equality are for show as they support regimes abroad that oppress women, they flunked on reconcilliaction.

It goes on and on. Canada is currently in a leadership crisis. Our best hope was Mulcair and the rank and file NDP dummies screwed that up. Now we have a muppet for Bay St., A low-substance flashy dresser and some WASP from Saskatchewan to chose from. Canada is in trouble.

Into thinking they're progressive.

"Hey look, gender parity in cabinet everyone!" As they keep Harper's climate change targets. Let's demand more!
