Attack ad against Harper, by Adbusters

Adbusters always does a great job, but this ad is exceptional. I hope a lot of people see it.

The ad features a man spitting on a flag sewn onto a woman’s bag.

Adbusters says that is based on an actual incident that happened at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris.

“What happened?” the man says. “You used to be the good ones.”

The narrator declares, “He was right.”

the lead of George W. Bush in many things. Ruining the province for oil that is no linger even needed. Willing to ruin the St. Laurence with toxic spills if necessary.

I still have print copies of their magazines from 15+ years ago packed away somewhere, (couldn't just toss 'em out when I moved), and I loved their initial involvement with Occupy. Any long time fan of the magazine knows how adept they are at being both slick and subversive, so I can't help but wonder,

-oh wait one second, ..let me firmly bolt on my tinfoil hat....

After watching the ad quickly once, I saw Pierre Trudeau, and I noticed an 'Angry', 'Bearded', 'French-citizen' spit on the Canadian flag.

Is there more to this ad than simply being anti-Harper?

....takes tinfoil hat off.

Interesting observations. Both those went right past me. Hopefully other viewers are as clueless as i am -- but not MORE clueless.

And just to lighten the mood a little, here's my favourite old Adbusters commercial:

Regarding my observations, I often overthink things, so hopefully I'm just being paranoid, and hopefully other viewers just enjoy the ad and don't over-analyses it.

I've watched the ad a few times, and I do have to wonder about the subliminal message. I can't imagine there wasn't a lot of thought put into the choice of clips. But then, what other PM could they have used to represent Canada's former status as a "one of the good ones"? I don't think Lester Pearson was quite as telegenic.

As for the angry, bearded, French citizen -- the more I think about it, the harder it is for me to write off. Definitely under the radar, but again, I can't totally believe it's a coincidence. Certainly that man is not what I think of when I imagine a quintessentially French citizen. If I'd been casting that role, I probably would have gone with a mime, or maybe a Gérard Depardieu lookalike.
