Americans are paying more attention to Canada. Should we worry?

snip

Truckers caught America's eye

The trucker convoy in early 2022 may mark the beginning of widespread U.S. interest in Canadian domestic politics, catching the interest of President Donald Trump and rapidly becoming a cause célèbre for MAGA.

snip

The convoy went viral, inspiring Americans to donate money and drawing commentary from Trump and other MAGA figures in what was, until then, a rare instance of American emotional investment in a Canadian domestic political issue.

Once engaged, that interest never faded, says Bridgman.

"We recently saw it around the ostrich farm as well," he said. “When there are Canadian moments where something can be weaponized or can be mobilized — and we see it sometimes around Indigenous issues, we see it sometimes around [medical assistance in dying], we see it sometimes around access to drugs — these sorts of moments will get picked up and circulated very quickly."

snip

In the MAGAsphere, Canada is often portrayed as a land emasculated by wokeness, conquered by Chinese Communist encroachment and Indian immigration, where free speech is suppressed and Albertans — portrayed as salt-of-the-earth ranchers and roughnecks — are desperate to escape to the embrace of the United States.

snip

Alberta looks likely to be ground zero for Americans sticking their oar into Canadian politics in the near future, if the present is any guide.

It's a long and comprehensive article and is well worth the time it takes to read it, imo.

1. Once the separatist referendum fails, it will hopefully mark the beginning of the end of Smith's career

Maple MAGA is a loud mouthed minority unlikely to gain more power, and is extremely unpopular with the Canadian general public.

2. I agree, they are still a fringe minority...

as they have been for decades. The poll numbers show Albertans are against separation, over 60%, and they have stayed consistent. I hope Smith will go but I am not holding my breath on that as Albertans tend to compartmentalize their thinking so will vote against separation but will, for the most part, still vote for her, albeit in lower numbers than previously, imo.

4. Well, they did have an NDP government not too long ago

And Carney’s Progressive Conservative brand of Liberalism seems to be gaining traction with many Conservatives.

If Canada slides into recession later this year, Smith could be in jeopardy.

and until they can win for a second time, it will remain that way, imo. Naheed Nenshi, the current NDP leader, is low key which may work in his favour but only time will tell. The interesting thing is I'm not seeing any recent poll numbers on where the parties stand which may mean Smith's numbers aren't great, that would be good news and I can only hope that is the case.

That will be the day, when a majority of adults get sworn in to control congress.

though trump will still have veto power over any legislation that is passed as there aren't the numbers for a veto-proof majority and I don't see the repubs changing their tune but one can hope on that as well.

the repub politicians put one thing first and foremost on their priority list and that is their own 'job protection' so, hopefully, they will see the writing on the wall and enough of them will distance themselves from trump. Fingers crossed on that one.

9. Many of these stories are amplified by bot accounts on FB, X, twitter and Youtube.

Even the CTV has done a recent story on the youtube fake accounts around these stories and in particular the Alberta separation. They are either AI slop or paid voice actors. There are tells for Canadians to recognize these fake videos, in particular the way they pronounce names of cities or areas. We will always have a small segment of our society that want to separate from Canada, I will never understand, like just effing leave, but no they want the rest of us to suffer for their beliefs.

The problem is, we too have some dumb asses and greedy grifters here, one prime example is the owners of the Ostrich farm who outright lied about the circumstances of the farm and used "Americans" to raise their profile and grift money from donations. It was all a scam, they knew damn well the herd was infected and the consequences. Most real farmers would have insurance to cover but alas they are the types always looking for an instant get rich scheme, they thought they would get by selling eggs or whatever to the ever grifting and in many cases fake cosmetic industry.

We need to educate those in our society that fall victim to these deceiving idiots.

I am listening to PP whine on CBC right now and he is lying through his teeth as usual. His supporters are, for the most part, the same ones who fall for the videos and the rightwing talking heads this CBC article is talking about.

Smith is supposed to be detailing what will happen this fall with the separation referendum, this should be interesting and nauseating at the same time.
