American-style MAGA politics has caused the Conservative Party of Canada to abandon Ukraine in its hour of need, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday.

Trudeau made the comments a day after Conservative Leader Pierre Poilivere said his party voted against the updated Canada-Ukraine free trade agreement in the House of Commons because it would compel the war-torn country to implement a carbon tax. The agreement does no such thing.

Asked about the Conservatives' opposition to the trade deal while attending the closing press conference of the Canada-European Union summit in St John's, Trudeau called the party's excuse for rejecting the agreement "absurd."

"The real story is the rise of a right-wing, American MAGA-influenced thinking that has made Canadian Conservatives — who used to be among the strongest defenders of Ukraine, I'll admit it — turn their backs on something Ukraine needs in its hour of need," Trudeau said alongside EU Commission President Ursula Gertrud von der Leyen.

Of course, it's really a nefarious plot: When there are enough buildings with that innocent-looking Canada stamp on them, the Canucks will pour across the border and claim them all! Says "Canada" right there on the label.

There is a surge in RWNJ in the world, pushed by the autocrats in the world. Democracies have to stick together and beat it.

Hopefully you won't have to build a wall. If our 2024 elections follow the trend, we should be over the worst of MAGAt fever.

wedge issues you had in the US in the last 35 years did not translate into power in Canada more often than not. So the right wing has dropped some of it. But yeah ... some in Canada watch the same podcasts and go to the same websites that are US MAGA. Conservatives are way ahead in the polls though because people are tired of Trudeau so he should get novel somehow or he will lose and the Conservative leader is a real 'beauty' (not as populist as Trump but he tries.)
